45 North Group helped KSMQ Public Media, a local non-profit PBS affiliate in Austin, Minnesota, in a multi-year project to create a new building designed specifically for media production and community engagement. The project began in 2018, when 45 North Group helped select, onboard, and engage a general contractor and architect. Preliminary project support involved evaluating new building sites and assisting with predesign planning, budgeting, and scheduling estimates to secure state bond funds and matching funds.

Being planned during COVID-19, the project saw cost increases and labor issues. 45 North Group provided support for these unique challenges, helping to manage an almost inflexible budget and schedule evolutions. 45 North Group coordinated with the general contractor, architect, and equipment supplier during construction and engaged additional vendors, such as for furniture, security, AV, and low voltage needs.

In the final stages of work, 45 North Group tracked the budget to assist with decision-making and facilitated the two-phase relocation process.

Community Connections

Unique terrazzo flooring, designed by an artist and host of one of KMSQ’s programs, Bebe Keith, was incorporated into the new space. The terrazzo is an art piece with designs related to the community, TV station, and landscape. Additionally, there is a large sliding door with frames to incorporate community art.

Ready for the Future

Previously, KSMQ spent 30+ years renting space at the local community college with shared access points, no dedicated amenities for employees, a lack of windows and natural light, minimal studio storage space, and noise transference issues. Embedded in the community, this new space allows them to provide high-quality, in-person programming by hosting musicians, artists, thought leaders, and more. The building is designed for efficiency, longevity, and to meet state B3 sustainability guidelines with features such as retention ponds, efficient HVAC, a bee lawn, and the potential for EV charging stations. With carefully planned sound/acoustic design, improved air quality and light, replaced broadcast equipment, new production areas, community spaces, and wellness features, KSMQ is set up to continue serving its 22 counties with public broadcasting well into the future.
